Texans Trade for WR Christian Kirk in a Deal Mirroring Last Year’s Joe Mixon Move

Christain Kirk

The Houston Texans have made a significant move to bolster their receiving corps, trading for wide receiver Christian Kirk from the Jacksonville Jaguars. This comes just a day after reports surfaced that Jacksonville planned to release him, marking a near-identical strategy to the Texans’ trade for Joe Mixon last year.

Rather than letting Kirk hit the open market, Texans general manager Nick Caserio stepped in and secured the receiver for a seventh-round pick, the same compensation used to acquire Mixon from Cincinnati in 2024. The primary benefit of making a trade instead of waiting for a release? Ensuring Kirk lands in Houston without competition from other teams.

Contract Considerations: A Likely Restructure Incoming

While the acquisition fills a major need for Houston, there’s still a financial aspect to address with Kirk’s contract.

  • One year remaining on his deal, with two void years behind it.

  • 2025 Base Salary: $16.5 million

  • Initial Cap Charge for Houston: $16,235,294 (prior to any adjustments).

The Texans will likely restructure Kirk’s contract, just as they did with Mixon last year. When they acquired Mixon, they scrapped his existing deal and signed him to a new contract that lowered his cap hit in 2024 while creating a more team-friendly structure long-term.

A similar approach with Kirk would allow Houston to retain flexibility while securing a valuable weapon for C.J. Stroud.

Texans Fill a Major Need at Slot Receiver

Kirk arrives in Houston to immediately take over as the primary slot receiver, a role he has thrived in over the past few years.

Kirk’s Slot Usage & Career Production

  • 2023 Season (8 games): 27 catches, 379 yards, 1 TD

  • Career Stats: 425 receptions, 5,357 yards (12.6 yards per catch), 31 TDs

  • 2023 Slot Usage: 81.7% (career high)

  • Career Slot Usage: 56.5% (via PFF)

Kirk’s 2023 season was cut short due to a fractured collarbone in Week 8, forcing him to miss the remainder of the year. Before the injury, he was on pace for another productive season, continuing his role as Jacksonville’s primary slot receiver.

While Kirk started his career as a versatile inside-outside receiver, he has evolved into a full-time slot weapon. His first three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals saw him playing the slot closer to 30% of the time, but after moving to Jacksonville in 2022, he transitioned into a heavy slot role, maximizing his strengths.

Reliable Hands & Underrated Toughness

Beyond his positional fit, Kirk brings reliability to the Texans' offense.

  • Career Drop Rate: 6.6% (a strong number for a high-volume receiver).

  • Toughness & Veteran Presence: Kirk’s ability to work over the middle of the field adds an element Houston lacked last season.

  • Proven Playmaker: Even with his injury-shortened 2023, his past production proves he can be a highly effective No. 2 or No. 3 option in an offense.

Final Thoughts

This trade mirrors last year’s Joe Mixon deal in more ways than one:

  1. The player was expected to be released, but Houston acted fast to secure him.

  2. The compensation was minimal (7th-round pick).

  3. A contract restructure is likely coming to make the deal more team-friendly.

With Kirk now in the fold, the Texans continue building around C.J. Stroud by providing him with reliable weapons. If Houston does restructure Kirk’s deal, this trade becomes an absolute steal, giving the offense a proven, tough, and productive slot receiver at a great value.

As free agency continues, don’t rule out more moves from Caserio and the front office—big additions can come at any time.
