The Houston Texans have taken another step in creating financial flexibility, restructuring linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair’s contract to clear $6.26 million in cap space, as first reported by Tom Pelissero. This move is the latest in a series of transactions aimed at maximizing the team’s cap situation ahead of key roster decisions.
This comes shortly after the Nico Collins restructure, which also created additional room under the cap. The Texans are positioning themselves to retain key players while maintaining flexibility for future moves. Houston’s front office, led by general manager Nick Caserio, has a number of remaining options to further increase available cap space, including:
Danielle Hunter restructure/extension – A long-term extension would lower his 2024 cap hit.
Laremy Tunsil restructure – Restructuring the star left tackle’s deal could create significant space.
Tytus Howard re-negotiation/cut – His contract could be adjusted or, in a drastic move, he could be released.
Shaq Mason re-negotiation/cut – Another veteran lineman whose deal could be adjusted.
Christian Kirk new contract – If the Texans extend Kirk, they could structure his deal to lower his cap hit in 2024.
Each of these moves gives Houston additional cap flexibility to sign free agents, extend key players, or facilitate trades as they continue building a competitive roster around quarterback C.J. Stroud.
With these financial maneuvers, the Texans are proving they’re focused on sustained success rather than short-term spending. Expect more adjustments as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
